Main Street
Year of construction:
Around 1875
Type of architecture:
Queen Anne style
Historical elements:
The advocate, F. X. Arthur Giroux first lived in this house.
In 1895, he was one the first French Canadians to establish
in Sweetsburg (now Cowansville). This gorgeous house was also
owned by his son, Louis Arthur Giroux, also a well-known advocate
and by his granddaughter, Mrs. Gabrielle Giroux Bertrand who
was the Brome-Missisquoi Member of Parliament and the wife of
Jean-Jacques Bertrand, Premier of the Province of Quebec from
1968 to 1970. Because of the Giroux family’s strong implication
in politics, many public figures such as Maurice Duplessis,
Pierre Elliott Trudeau and Jean Charest have visited this house.
