William
F. Vilas moved his plow making business from East Farnham to Cowansville
in 1893. Soon after, he started making school desks in addition
to the agricultural implements. The business grew rapidly. So
in 1906, Mr. Vilas built a reinforced concrete three-storey builiding,
one of the first of its kind in Canada, on South Street, near
the railroad tracks.
