Born
on May 31, 1816, he was the son of Reverend Charles Caleb Cotton.
Reverend
Cotton was the first priest ordained by the Church of England
in Quebec City and was the first to be appointed to Dunham County
in 1808.
Charles
Edward Cotton studied medicine at Jefferson College, Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania, where he graduated in 1837. He then practiced
medicine for
48 years, first in Brome and from 1867, in Cowansville.
He
was married to Jane V. Stuart (1821-1897). Their son, Cedric Lemoine
Cotton, also became a doctor.
Dr.
C. E. Cotton lived on Main Street in a house where we find today
the store "Maison des Fleurs Cowansville" (337 Main).
He
died December 10, 1885 and is interred in the Cowansville Cemetery
on Main Street.
